My name is Jackie Avery, and I am a painter who lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
People say that my paintings are like little scenes from a larger story. Often, viewers spontaneously invent story lines to go with them, or relate them to their own lives.
They certainly have a narrative quality, and I’m drawn to quirky photographs and old books as visual resources. Most recently, I’ve been using an old photo album for my beach scenes, and a 1920’s picture encyclopedia to find odd subjects.
I use a four color restricted palette, (Naphthol Red, Phthalo Blue, Hansa Yellow and Titanium White,) because it keeps my results consistent and clean. I also prime my work surface with red-orange paint before beginning, which peeks through in the finished piece, and brings vibrancy and contrast
The paintings are acrylic on wood ‘boxes’, (unless noted,) and are painted on the edges, ready to hang. Each painting is sealed with my favorite varnish for extra luminosity & protection.
I received a Bachelors Degree in Painting from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1994.Website: www.jackieavery.com
