Each of the three continents I have inhabited profoundly impacted my art. The gestural and energetic brush strokes of calligraphy marked my early years in China. Then a dramatic change to the carefree life of South America where intense color, vivid smells, the pulsing rhythm of samba and the beauty of dance awakened senses previously unknown. Life in the U.S. brought the artistic diversity of the three continents full circle with my discovery of the Abstract Expressionism of the ’40s and its application to realism by the Bay Area Figurative Movement of the ’50s. The merging of these diverse experiences influence my style of painting and the color palette I use.
Abstract painting allows me to freely engage with my inner emotions, devoid of any preconceptions and let the weight of the brushstrokes, the motion they create and the color palette to tell the story.
I work spontaneously, relying on a sensual and intuitive response to texture, form and color. My process is all about tearing down and rebuilding by laying on the paint, destroying the paint by covering it with more paint and then bringing the paint back. I paint with gusto using my whole body to enhance the energy, intensity and to bring life out of the paint. The compositions reveal as they conceal and offer many moments of contemplation.
